The benefits of finding an egg donor in California

California is a popular destination for intended parents looking for an egg donor. Intended parents can expect to find:

  • A wide range of high-quality donors

  • A diverse donor population, given California’s reputation as the largest and most diverse state in the nation

  • A robust pool of top-tier fertility clinics, reproductive attorneys, and other resources

How California screens egg donors

Donor Concierge’s vetted California donor agencies all follow the strict standards and guidelines set forth by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), and our own Donor Concierge standards.

The FDA requires that egg donors undergo a physical examination and be screened for infectious diseases. At the same time, the ASRM recommends additional screening measures such as psychoeducational counseling, genetic screening, and complete medical history.

The ASRM’s recommendations also include donors:

  • Be between the ages of 21 and 34

  • Have good physical health, which is determined through a physical exam, including a pelvic ultrasound

  • Undergo a psychological evaluation and counseling to ensure that the egg donor understands her role in the family-building process and is emotionally and mentally stable

Navigating California egg donor costs

Egg donor costs vary on several factors, including location, choice of donor, and which fertility clinic you use. On average, these costs generally fall between $30,000 to $65,000 and include payment for:

  • Donor agency fees

  • Donor compensation

  • Costs for medical processes, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), ICSI, and frozen embryo transfer

  • Legal fees

  • Travel and other expenses

Navigating the costs associated with a donor journey can feel overwhelming. However, there are options available to help make the process easier to afford. Some of these options include fertility treatment loans and grants.

Egg Donation FAQs

What is the difference between a fresh and frozen egg donation cycle?

The primary difference between fresh and frozen egg donation cycles is the need to synchronize the menstrual cycles of the egg donor and recipient. In a fresh egg donation cycle, the egg donor and recipient’s cycles are synchronized so that the fertilized embryo will be quickly transferred into the recipient’s uterus for implantation. In a frozen egg donation cycle, the eggs are retrieved and cryopreserved for later use. Once ready, the frozen eggs are thawed, fertilized, and prepared for IVF.

Will my baby look like me if I use a donor egg?

We do our best to match you with donors who look like they could be a part of your extended family. Maybe a cousin, or a sibling. During your Donor Concierge intake process, you will share pictures of yourself, your partner, and your family with your case manager so that they can keep your physical appearance in mind when curating your potential donors. While no one can guarantee what a baby will look like once they are born (not even families who are conceiving through traditional means), our team will prioritize matching you with donors to whom you feel a connection and resemblance.

Why would someone need an egg donor?

Egg donation helps many different types of people and families have a child.

What are the chances of pregnancy with donor eggs?

According to the preliminary 2020 report from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), 44.6% of cycles involving fresh donor eggs resulted in a live birth, with 41.1% of frozen cycles resulting in a live birth. See the 2020 report from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART).

Is it hard to bond with your baby when you use donor eggs?

It’s not uncommon for intended parents to have concerns about using a donor egg to have a child, especially about whether or not they’ll be able to bond with a baby that is not genetically related to them. However, people who have gone through the egg donation process and everything it entails are people who want more than anything to have a child. The love they feel for their baby begins to grow way before conception. While bonding with a newborn can be difficult for anyone, including parents who have had a child the traditional way, many parents with donor-conceived children find themselves overjoyed and completely in love with the baby once it’s born.
